Twechar

A respite service for adults with a learning disability in East Dunbartonshire.

About

At Twechar we provide residential short breaks for adults who have a learning disability, and may also have physical disabilities or complex support needs. We are a flexible service; we offer a variety of breaks, depending on your needs, and the needs of your family.

When you stay at Twechar it’s your holiday, and it’s up to you what you’d like to get out of your stay. When you arrive we’ll have a Welcome Meeting where we find out what you’d like to get up to.

We offer a range of activities and outings that you might not normally have access to, but if you’d rather just enjoy a bit of quiet downtime that’s fine too. We’ll find out about your favourite foods in advance, and then whilst you’re here, we’ll base our Food Sheets on what you want to eat that day.

At the end of your stay we’ll complete an ‘Outcome of Stay’ review, comparing it to the plans we made together at the Welcome Meeting. When we encounter communication barriers, we’ll use pictorial aids and other devices to ensure that you can make their wishes known. We encourage healthy living, and can cater to all dietary requirements / preferences, often using produce from our own vegetable garden.

We pride ourselves on taking the time to really get to know the people we support, and have known many of them for a number of years; it’s really satisfying to see the same faces come back repeatedly, and to hear from families that they’ve really been looking forward to their stay. If an individual’s support needs change, we have systems in place to make sure that we’re kept up to date, so that we can continue to provide the highest standard of care and support.

How to get involved

If you or someone you know would like to come and stay at Twechar they will need to be referred to us by a Care Manager from East Dunbartonshire Social Work Services. We’ll work closely with your family / Care Manager so that we have a clear picture of how best to support you, and what you like / don’t like. You’ll then be invited to visit Twechar so that you can see it for yourself, and get a sense of whether you’d like to come and stay or not.

If you have any questions, contact us using the details at the bottom of this page; we can guide you through the process, and help you to set up your first visit.
